If you haven't tried these before, we suggest you should. These mints are very unique with a violet floral taste that will leave your breath smelling fresh.
Although they say this violet scent was introduced by Charles Howard in the 1940s, the concept of violet pastilles have been around for centuries. What are pastilles? A pastille is a type of sweet or medicinal pill made of a thick liquid that has been solidified and is meant to be consumed by light chewing and allowing it to dissolve in the mouth. They are also used to describe certain forms of incense.
Today we don't really hear that term, but historically it was well known. If someone used the term "Pastilles" you would automatically associate them with breath mints or even a stomach-soothing type of sweet. In many cases, different forms of what we consider candy today were actually first known as medicine.
In fact, historically the term "mints" were really first considered medicinal too and used for soothing the stomach. In the beginning, they were known as 'troches'. You could acquire troches from your local Apothecary for tummy aches, sore throats, digestion, and other ailments. Eventually, they were given the name Pastilles and were flavored with all sorts of flavorings for freshening the breath, to help with sore throats, and more. At this time, they started becoming well-known for freshening the breath. Today we don't think of mints freshening the breath as a prescription or medicine, but historically they were very much considered medicinal. They could be found in all shapes and sizes, from small round hard candies to large flat circles and also fancy squares ( as is the shape of this delectable candy mint).
These would work wonderfully as a gift or even to just toss in your purse. So if you love the scent of violets, give these vintage candies a try.
