Milk of Orange Blossoms is a gentle botanical cleansing astringent from history that is perfect for oily, acne-prone skin and is formulated to help tone and cleanse naturally!
To USE: Give this milk lotion a vigorous shake. Use a sponge or cotton ball to apply some liquid to the cotton ball and apply it to your skin. You don't need to rinse off unless you feel the need.
NOTE: With the cold temperatures, please remember that your Milks may be delivered without any milkiness. The milkiness comes from the tincture of Gum of Benjamin and how it's heated. Still, no matter how milky we can get it to look, once the finished product hits cold temperatures, the stability of retaining that milky color disappears. So if you receive the milk without much milkiness, know this is a natural process that happens in very cold weather. It does not change the effectiveness of the product. If you have questions, please ask. :)
If you love our Milk of Roses, you will adore our Milk of Orange Blossoms. Milk of Roses is by far the most popular cosmetic "milk" in history, but others were also around. It doesn't have 'milk' in- it's more about the product's color. In our archives, we have many, many references to "toilet milk" and skin lotions." The popularity of specific scents vary throughout history, but orange blossom was one of the few, like rose, that was generally used in all centuries. Orange Blossoms historically were procured by enfleurage, which involves taking the fresh blossoms and putting them on screens loaded with fat. This technique isn't often used much as it is very, very expensive, whereas Neroli is extracted by steam distillation. Neroli oil is also very expensive but has similar but different notes.
HISTORY:
The bitter orange tree is native to eastern Africa and tropical Asia, but it is today grown throughout the Mediterranean region. Bitter orange blossom water was used for skin cleaning and refreshing in ancient Cyprus, and many still use this water today. The peels of bitter oranges ( where orange blossoms come from) have been used for centuries in ancient and folk medicines, with other medicinal products than just cosmetics. For example, herbal teas were made with the peels because of their digestive and carminative properties.
Historically, Bitter Orange was also used in the production of stomachic, carminative, and laxative products. Before the 17th century, neroli oil was a highly traded commodity. It was also used in ancient Egypt, traditional Chinese medicine and to help fight the plague. Neroli's popularity started in the 17th century. The story goes that Italian aristocrats adored it because the Duchess of Bracciano was said to use the Bitter Orange Essential Oil to perfume her gloves and her bathwater. By the end of the 17th century, she was noted as having introduced it as a fashionable fragrance. Although there is a slight difference between Neroli and Orange Blossoms, today many times they are lumped together. Fun Fact- In 1909 –The Florida House of Representatives approved the orange blossom (citrus sinensis) as the official State Flower of Florida.
The scent of Neroli refreshing with sweet flowery notes and a few green and spicy notes mixed in. On the other hand, Orange blossom is close, but the notes are a little different. Orange blossom is usually described as having a sweeter warmer smell with more floral notes. Neroli is extracted by steam distillation and orange blossom is extracted via a process of enfleurage.

Ironically they are very similar. Orange Blossom Water was touted as helping to cure historical ailments. "Orange Flower water is held in high esteem for its aromatic properties and ability to ease tension, anxiety, and hysteric complaints..."
NOTE: Historically, hysteria was thought to manifest itself in women (female hysteria) with a variety of symptoms, including anxiety, shortness of breath, fainting, insomnia, irritability, nervousness, as well as sexually forward behavior. These symptoms mimic symptoms of other more definable diseases and create a case for arguing against the validity of hysteria as an actual disease, and it is often implied that it is an umbrella term for an indefinable illness One of the early definitive works on hysteria was Paul Briquet's study involving 400 hysterical patients from 1849 to 1859. - wikipedia.org
