Patchouli oil is an essential oil that comes from the leaves of the patchouli plant. Its aroma is extremely rich, deep, earthy, sweet-herbaceous, and somewhat spicy, with ethereal, floral-sweet, and wine-like top notes and a mellow, woody-balsamic body note. It is an herby green bush that grows to about three feet and is related to the mint family.

The patchouli herb has been used for many centuries and was popularized by Indian indigenous practices and was known to be extensively used in the Middle East along the silk trading routes. Its unique aroma became associated with fine exported Indian fabrics and because of this, it came to be much appreciated in Europe by the 1840s. It is even said that Napoleon supposedly introduced this exotic oil and intoxicating scent to Europe. But it wasn't until the 1960s that its aroma came to be commonly associated with the anti-establishment and hippie movements.

I find this part fascinating:
As exquisite textiles, spices, and objects were making their way westward along these trade routes, the fragrant patchouli leaves were packed inside the trunks of silks, carpets, and other treasures to help with protection against moths and insects. When European merchants would open these trunks and prepare their products for sale, the strong earthy aroma of patchouli would embrace them. Patchouli soon became inextricably linked to the exotic objects of the Far East. It quickly became associated with all that was different from the Western culture which made it very desirable. In fact, if silk, fabric, or carpets didn’t smell like patchouli, merchants along the trade routes doubted its authenticity.

Color/ Age/ Perfumes:
When this essential oil is first extracted it has a slightly viscous, orange hue, and one can detect a lighter fruity and minty background that rises above the deeper, woodsier middle and base notes. Patchouli Essential Oil is unique because it gets better with age. As it ages, the color and viscosity deepens, and the earthier, darker, richer notes emerge. This is one aspect of why Patchouli has made such an important component of many perfumes.

What can it be used for:
It is great for balancing the skin's sebum production. It also helps to cleanse and fortify the skin. It’s particularly effective against dandruff and helps with scalp irritations that may hinder the growth of the hair. Try adding a few drops of Patchouli Essential Oil to a hair mask or your conditioner, make sure to massage a bit into your scalp first. It is also said to help fight infections becuase it has excellent antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It is also a good oil to add to a chest rub when you have a cold or administer topically if you have a rash or wound that you want to prevent from getting infected. Patchouli works well in combatting nail fungus.

Emotional/Spiritual and Psychological:
Patchouli Essential Oil is deeply relaxing and can help calm you,. Many believe it can greatly improve mediation practices by soothing the mind from excess thoughts and worry. Its deep and musky scent can be arousing, allowing a sense of confidence and freedom of self-expression. Try adding a few drops to a body massage oil or diffuser.

We understand people either love or hate patchouli, but we feel that this historical oil is super versatile and should not be overlooked.
