We received many requests for a clear eyelash/ eyebrow pomade that was historical but also gentle, nontoxic, natural, and helpful for the eyelashes. We unveil an original recipe from 1929!
We began our recipe search years ago, but recently, our apprentice, Isabella, was perusing our library doing some research and stumbled upon the perfect recipe that not only said it would give curls to the eyelashes but after looking at the ingredients, we realized are perfect for helping to strengthen them as well.
**History:**
The first eyelash curler was patented in 1931, but the desire for curled, healthy, long, and strong eyelashes has been linked to general health since the 19th century. Before mascara became widely used, various eyelash pomades emerged, each promising various benefits, although not all were made from healthy ingredients. As the 1870s arrived, a new ingredient called petroleum jelly, known for its remarkable properties, began to be included in many apothecary recipes for cosmetics and the care of the skin, as well as the "M" type of salves and balms and, interestingly enough, did you know that the first 'modern' mascara was created by a French perfumer named Eugène Rimmel, who in the early 20th century blended petroleum jelly with coal dust to develop his formula.
Petroleum jelly has a long history of being used for eyelash enhancement and care because of its ability to condition, moisturize, and potentially enhance the appearance of eyelashes. Remember that by the 1920s, cake mascara was available ( In fact, we had the first ever recipe in our shop a while back), but even then, women wanted products that would help curl and enhance the lashes because, at that time, mascara wasn't as commonly accepted as it is today, plus the first recipes for cake mascara often used soap which sometimes dried out the lashes, so you would need a good lash product like this one to keep them healthy.
Ingredients and Helpful Information:
- Apply this lightly; too much will make the lashes heavy and goopy. The instructions say to apply it with a cosmetic brush, and then the lashes are to be brushed upwards to help the curl.
- This original recipe was formulated to condition and enhance the appearance of lashes (with regular use), helping to curl and moisturize them naturally. Remember, this was before the eyelash curler was invented.
- A little will go a long way!
Application: Apply 1ce daily and allow for 1-2 minutes for it to soak in and dry up a little. Always do a test beforehand.
Ingredients: Caseline, Organic Peach Kernel Oil, Paraffin
Vaseline can help keep eyelashes moisturized by sealing in moisture and making them appear fuller and shinier. It also helps hydrate and protect them to prevent breakage. Vaseline is wonderful for those who are sensitive to ingredients. Plus, it helps the lashes look more lifted.
Peach Kernel Oil - contributes to the health and growth of eyelashes. It nourishes and helps to naturally strengthen lashes over time, helping them grow longer and thicker. This oil is also great for the hair follicles.
Paraffin - is often used in mascara formulations to help adhere pigments to the lashes and give a stiffness so that when you brush long lashes upwards, they will appear to hold curl. Plus, this wax helps with the barrier to lock in moisture and all the benefits of the peach kernel and vaseline. It's also a natural emollient, so it will help keep your lashes soft.
