I fell in love with this recipe because it exemplifies the transition from the heavy cosmetics of the early 18th century to the new, more natural options, including the introduction of “lotions” by the late 18th century. These lotions would soon dominate the cosmetic world as skincare became the most essential beauty treatment a woman could use. And rouge… rouge is also an important historical cosmetic. :)

I love this one. the herbs remind me a bit of “gypsy astringent” without the vinegar, so it will be more gentle. Let's take a look at what is all in this “Ladies Lotion.”

Rosemary can help lighten dark spots and blemishes on the skin, resulting in an improved skin complexion. The anti-inflammatory properties of rosemary extract can help reduce skin swelling and puffiness. It also helps to heal burns and soothe the skin.

Spikenard: Historically, Spikenard has been used to uplift mood and promote relaxation. It supports clean, healthy skin and is believed to possess antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been recognized as a potent remedy for various skin ailments caused by bacterial infections and is said to assist in eliminating bacteria from the skin. When applied to wounds, it helps prevent them from contracting bacterial infections. This makes it an excellent option for treating acne.

Lavender: Lavender helps the skin by removing toxins to help reverse premature aging. It is rich in antioxidants that work to prevent and counteract the harmful effects of pollutants. It can soothe your skin just like it calms the mind and relaxes your nerves. Additionally, it also helps keep bugs away and aids in healing sores and acne.

Roses: are regarded as an anti-inflammatory agent and a tissue regenerator. They are rich in therapeutic benefits. Rose petals help reduce redness, calm, moisturize, and prepare the skin for other products. Rose is excellent overall and perfect for those with sensitive skin.

Thyme: Recent studies have found that, in certain circumstances, thyme may be more effective than some prescription creams containing benzoyl peroxide for treating blemishes caused by acne bacteria. That’s great news! It’s particularly beneficial for oily and sensitive skin types. Furthermore, thyme helps to even out skin tone and contains powerful antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental stressors.

Chamomile: has soothing and healing qualities. It can help soften the skin and alleviate inflammation and conditions such as acne and psoriasis. Chamomile also serves as a great skin toner! It is well-known for its calming, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has been recognized for aiding in treating psoriasis, eczema, and acne. Sage regulates sebum production and tones the skin. It acts as a mild astringent and reduces inflammation related to acne. Additionally, it possesses antibacterial properties, making it suitable for oily, combination, or blemish-prone skin.

Sage is rich in vitamins A, B, and C, as well as minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, and iron. It aids in preventing wrinkles and fine lines, and it also helps treat acne, skin blemishes, eczema, and psoriasis. Plus, bugs tend to avoid it! WIN-WIN!

Marjoram: is known for its toning properties. It also has antioxidant, analgesic, antispasmodic, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, promoting fast healing. Some claim that marjoram can clears the skin and improve dull complexions. While we can’t guarantee this, studies have been conducted on the subject, making the concept quite interesting. So as you can see why I am really excited about this. I think you will absolutely love it.
