A time-honored blend based on an 18th-century midwife’s tea recipe, reimagined for soothing cramps, muscle aches, and tension. This balm delivers natural relief with anti-inflammatory and calming herbs—perfect for monthly care or everyday soreness. Compact, gentle, and deeply restorative.

Herbal Comfort & Recovery Salve
This soothing balm is based on an original recipe recorded in the diary of an 18th- and early 19th-century midwife. What began as a gentle tea blend for easing digestive discomfort revealed itself to be far more versatile through further research. The herbs used in this formula were already well-documented centuries ago for their healing properties—especially when applied topically.
With deep respect for tradition and natural remedies, we’ve reimagined this tea recipe into a  topical salve for aches and pains. Historically, women turned to these herbs for relief from monthly abdominal discomfort and lower back tension. Yet the same ingredients have long supported relief for sore muscles and deep tissue discomfort regardless of gender.
Massage into sore backs, tense shoulders, or cramping muscles and feel the relief seep in. This balm soothes and relaxes with its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and calming properties—ideal for everyday stress, active lifestyles, or monthly wellness routines. Compact and reliable, it’s perfect for anyone on the move.

Inspired by Martha Ballard, Healer of the Frontier
This salve honors the quiet strength and deep wisdom of Martha Ballard, an 18th-century midwife and herbalist whose life was defined by care, community, and the healing power of plants. Between 1785 and 1812, Martha chronicled her daily work in a detailed diary—delivering babies, nursing the sick, and tending sore bodies with homemade remedies crafted from the land around her.
Herbal salves like this one weren’t luxuries; they were necessities. Blended from botanicals passed down through generations, these formulas offered relief for everything from cramps to backaches to deep muscle strains—ailments Martha knew well in her tireless rounds across rivers, snowfields, and dusty trails.
Martha Ballard’s diary doesn’t often describe ailments in modern medical terms, but there are several entries that hint at her tending to sore limbs, swelling, and general physical discomfort—what we’d now call muscle aches and pains.
One particularly relevant entry comes from June 1, 1789, where she wrote:
“I applyd a poltis of Basswd to Manlys foot it being sweld.”
This shows her use of a basswood poultice to reduce swelling—likely from strain or injury. Another entry from December 1, 1787, mentions:
“I Bathd it with Camphor & mellolot ointment, applied a plaster of my salv.”
This was for a young man’s lame knee, and her treatment included a bath with camphor and melilot ointment, followed by a salve—classic herbal care for joint or muscle pain.
While she didn’t always specify “muscle aches,” her remedies for swelling, lameness, and stiffness suggest she frequently treated what we’d now recognize as musculoskeletal discomfort.
This balm honors that tradition: simple, powerful, and rooted in the resilience of women like Martha, whose hands shaped lives and whose knowledge still blooms in every jar.
