We have been searching high and low for historical brushes and combs. We think this one measures up! This is a small-toothed comb with the handle being used to part the hair. These combs are also great for taking out the "frizzing". This lovely high-quality wooden comb is very similar to Diderot's depiction shown in the last photo. We have been using and selling them all season long. They have been so popular we haven't had time until now to get them up in our shop!
This comb smells heavenly because it's made from sandalwood. The back part of the comb is used for parting and the front is used for general combing and combing out small entanglements. Once the hair is freshly combed, the small tooth comb is meant to help clean the hair. When using your pomatum and powder will help clean the hair when combed properly. You will see all your dirt gather in the head of the comb.
According to a 1780's hair manual they suggest that it is best to use a small toothed comb for fine work, like combing curls, cleaning the hair, and so forth. It recommends that for any large mats or tangles to use a wide toothed comb ( we have those too!).
