Healing & Soothing Especially For Use Before Applying Powder
Most of us don’t know what Vanishing Cream is, so let's start there. Vanishing Cream is so-called because it “vanishes” into the skin. It also is touted to “vanish” skin discoloration, and acne as well as moisturize the skin. But the main attribute associated with Vanishing Cream is for making a protective layer against your skin and the makeup you are applying. This is meant to protect the skin. So apply this first, rub it in, let it sit a minute - then apply your makeup.
We are super excited about this recipe because, not only have you been asking for a “vanishing cream” for a very long time, but it also really bridges the gap for us when thinking about how historical cosmetics and skincare changed throughout history to get us where we are now.
Previously, we had salves and pomatums for the skin to take away spots and moisturize… then we had cold creams which were excellent for taking off makeup, moisturizing, and sleeping in… but something happens in the 1920s and 1930s as we move closer to mass production and chemicals coming into our lives. By the 1920’s they were starting to figure out that different skin types existed, from normal, to oily, and even dry…. This fueled a whole new jump into the idea of skincare for specific skin types. When Vanishing Creams were introduced, they really hit the cold cream companies hard causing cold creams to reformulate their recipes which is one reason you see the “New” type of cold cream for the 1930s in our shop.

Not only were these new vanishing creams crazy popular- they were also made with “new” ingredients.
So let's go over the ingredients- because they are a little different.
Before you get all nervous because of the names let's break it down for you... These ingredients aren’t as scary as one would think… different than what is commonly seen in the shop.. but not scary.
Please Note: The product is an all-natural product so batches may vary a bit and some settling may occur during travel. The heat will affect the fluffiness and consistency of the whipped product, but not the actual product itself. Visual changes may occur with temperature changes so if it is a little flaky that is ok. It will not affect its potency.
NOTE: It's that time of year again. Please remember that our products can change and melt with changing weather and heat. For our vanishing cream, some of the pink water may come out of the product with travel and warm conditions. This is normal, just discard it or mix it in. Also if you have some small bits, don't panic that is a little bit of steric acid ( Natual Fatty acid) that didn't get dissolved. Just wipe it off. It's the beauty of natural historical and vintage products made with minimal ingredients and original recipes! Many would argue, that the look or consistency can change, but they get the job done better than their modern counterparts.
About The Ingredients:
Sodium Carbonate - If you know what Sodium Bicarbonate is ( Baking Soda was invented in 1846) then you can easily understand sodium carbonate. It’s taking the backing soda and heating it so the carbon dioxide and water are released, leaving what historically we would call “soda ash”
This can help adjust your PH levels, and acts as a cleaning agent for the skin, helping to tighten pores and absorb excess oil. This ingredient is actually found in many products you use every day, especially in cosmetics.
Boric Acid - "Boric Acid was first prepared by Wilhelm Homberg (1652–1715) from borax, by the action of mineral acids, and was given the name sal sedativum Hombergi (sedative salt of Homberg)". We only use cosmetic grade Boric Acid, but historically, boric acid has been used in various skin cleaners, mainly as a buffer or an antiseptic. This prevents bacterial growth, controls the ph level of the skin, and helps keep the emulsion from separating. It also helps remove dirt. This ingredient is used widely today in many products from makeup to hair care, and sun prevention.
Vegetable Glycerine - It has a cooling effect on the skin. This is a palm glycerine ( no corn). Glycerine is great at skin-replenishing and restoring. So if you have dry skin, glycerine is great at keeping the skin moisturized. Glycerine, when combined with other emollients, works well to help soften and replenish the skin.
Stearic Acid- This word seems a little scary but it’s actually a naturally occurring fatty acid. It’s actually derived from animal and vegetable fats and oils. Fatty Acids are used in the production of hormones that help regulate a variety of functions, like blood pressure, blood clotting, and immune response. Stearic Acids are used in most skincare today. It reminds me of a cross between beeswax and fat (compared to our normal older historical ingredients). It helps with emollients and thickening cosmetic products. This was actually fascinating to watch as it’s like a flaky wax-type material, but when heated with all the ingredients expands into this lovely smooth cream.
Bulgarian Rose EO- This is great for the skin on so many levels!
Carmine- This makes me laugh because the amount of carmine used is so teeny that I was even a bit surprised. This is just to tint it “flesh” which was a popular color for cosmetics and face powder in the 1930s.
NOTE: Color vibrancy will vary between batches. Also, Vanishing Cream is whipped which is what gives it fluffiness. It will be very soft and velvety. In the hotter months, especially with shipping, this cream is liable to melt which means the air will come out and it may look different and seem like there is less in the jar. I assure you it's the same amount as when it left our apothecary, minus the air and fluff. If this happens, don't fret. It's a natural recipe with no modern emulsifying ingredients to keep things fluffy. This is one reason historical creams were sold in small jars. If it melts, It's still completely useable, just stir it up. Batches may vary slightly due to small production runs! Natural skincare is the best skincare!
