Revived from 1926, our Menthol Headache Cologne — crafted from an original Vintage Headache Remedy Cologne formula — and offers citrus-menthol clarity and cooling vintage care.

The Story of Our Menthol Headache Cologne
In the quiet pages of a 1926 formulary, we uncovered a forgotten remedy: Headache Cologne — a refreshing citrus and menthol blend once cherished for soothing headache tension and weary muscles. Widely popular in its time, it was crafted by numerous apothecaries, each with their own twist and label. But tucked away in the archives, we found a match — the original label that paired perfectly with the recipe. And we couldn’t let it fade into history.
This recreation is more than a scent — it’s a revival. Our Menthol Headache Cologne follows the exact vintage formulation, brought to life with care, research, and reverence for its roots. The bottle wears its original 1920s label proudly. The fragrance carries the brisk charm of traditional Eau de Cologne — citrus oils paired with mint and menthol — bright and invigorating. Versions of Headache Colognes were once staples in sick rooms and on vanities alike. Even famed 19th-century blends were sometimes designed to offer headache relief.
History repeats in scent and sensation. What was once considered a cure has become a comfort — and we invite you to step into that story with every drop.

A Brief History of Headache Remedies & Eau de Cologne
For centuries, fragrant water were used for thier aroma and restorative effects.  From ancient apothecaries to elegant boudoirs, colognes and vinegars weren't mere perfumes; they were designed to bring comfort.
Eau de Cologne:  In the late 17th century, Europe welcomed a citrus-based elixir called Aqua Mirabilis (“miracle water”), believed to ward off illness and refresh the spirit. By 1709, Italian perfumer Jean Antoine Farina refined it into Eau de Cologne — a bright, herbaceous tonic with curative intent.

Though perfumery grew more fashionable in the 19th century, Eau de Cologne’s therapeutic legacy endured. In 1853, Guerlain created Eau de Cologne Impériale for Empress Eugénie of France — a blend designed to soothe headaches and migraines, echoing its medicinal roots.

Headache Cologne & Menthol Waters:  Fast-forward to the early 20th century, and we see the rise of Headache Cologne — a specialized form of Eau de Cologne infused with menthol for topical relief. These blends appeared in pharmacy formularies as early as 1900 and persisted through at least 1946. They were commonly sold under labels like "Headache Water" or "Menthol Cologne," meant to be applied to the forehead and temples for stimulating, cooling relief.
The 1926 formulary that inspired this revival even notes:
"Cologne Water for several hundred years and justly occupied an important place among perfumes. It had its origin in the city of Cologne, Germany, and has been prepared by the same firms for a long period….A special form of cologne water in which menthol is dissolved has been largely sold under the name of “Headache Cologne. These products are delightfully refreshing and possess genuine therapeutic value. The plain cologne waters are especially acceptable when used in a sick-room. The headache cologne, when applied to the forehead, is both refreshing and stimulating.”
Our revival of Menthol Headache Cologne began with a discovery: a recipe dated 1926, tucked into the vaults of forgotten pharmacy lore. But the magic moment? Finding the matching original label from the 1920s — a rare alignment of formula and artwork. These colognes were produced by many apothecaries, each with its own interpretation. Yet this one, with its intact label, gave us the perfect vessel to reawaken history.
To honor its origins, we’ve bottled it in glass with a reducer— no spray cap, just a few drops into the hands and gently massaged where relief is needed. With its menthol content, the skin experiences a warm-to-cool transition, reminiscent of early medicinal cologne waters. It’s legit — a living artifact.

Common Threads of Healing Across Cultures

Headaches have plagued humanity for millennia, and responses to them reflect spiritual beliefs, sensory care, and evolving science.- Ancient Egypt (c. 1550 BCE): Clay crocodiles were bound to the head with linen inscribed with healing gods’ names — both ritual and pressure remedy.- Greek & Roman Era: Hippocrates documented migraine symptoms; Galen attributed headaches to digestive imbalance and prescribed purging.- Middle Ages: Treatments included opium-vinegar poultices and trepanation. Mystic Hildegard of Bingen’s migraine visions became some of the earliest aura accounts.- Community Medicine: Martha Ballard, an 18th-century midwife and apothecary in Maine, chronicled practical plant-based treatments for “head pain,” often using mint, lavender, camphor, and vinegar.- 17th–19th Century: Medical theories shifted toward vascular causes. Remedies included nitroglycerin tinctures, marijuana infusions, mustard plasters, and even centrifugation to draw blood from the head.- 20th Century onward: Pharmaceutical solutions emerged—aspirin, ergotamine, triptans—yet topical and aromatic remedies persisted. Our own Migraine Balm continues that legacy with reverence.

Headache care has always been personal. Whether it was a clay charm tied to the forehead or a balm gently rubbed in by someone who cared, the act was about more than just relief — it was comfort, connection, and ritual. Our Menthol Headache Cologne and Migraine Balm don’t promise miracles. What they offer are time-honored remedies brought back with intention, respect, and a little bit of love.
