I'm super excited about this. Historically- we often hear historical references to rag curls, papillote curls and pin curls, but very rarely hear it in reference to paper curls. We think more about paper being used for curls for the 18th and early 19th centuries- However, paper curls were another common way to get the fashionable styles in the Edwardian era. I included a bit of instruction on how to use the papers ( from 1840) on one of the photos - make sure to check that out. I choose this excerpt because it was pretty thorough as far as the different types of curls that the "curl papers" can be used for.
If you want to use them with a papillote iron ( We have an original in the shop right now) that is fine- or like the other option- to roll them like we think of rolling curlers and then tying or twisting. If your curl paper is long enough, you can fold it in half and then pull the end though, securing them that way. They are comfier to sleep on than pin curls.
The original books talk about doing it at night or if you have a fancy event in the evening, they can be worn in the day- but at that point, they prefer if you have papers the same color as your hair so as to look less garish. :) Remember, sleep in a headscarf ( silk works best).
This would be used similarly to the 1930s curl fluid. The ingredients do differ a bit. They say these work best if you use on dry or almost dry hair. You would add a little of the fluid into a bowl and use your fingers after the hair is sectioned off and before the curl paper goes on, you would wet your fingers and slightly dampen the hair with the curl mixture, then roll the paper on. You don't want the hair too wet because depending on what type of paper or fabric or even toilet paper you use... you don't want to saturate the paper. This will take some practice, and everyones' amount they use will differ.
This bottle is a limited edition. We will probably offer it in smaller bottles eventually.
When I have been using our historical curling fluids- I use them at night or in the am to set my hair ( usually in foam rollers) and then when I take my rollers out- I use a soft pomade for shine and taming frizz if I have any ( especially if I slept on my set). So if you want to add a soft pomade, check them out. They are in glass containers. Soft Pomade does not contain Bees Wax. We don't have a 1912 one out yet. We are working on it :)
For an extra long shelf life this may be kept in the fridge ( it doesn't need to be) Also there may be some sediment this is normal as it is a natural product. Feel free to shake if needed. It is colored pink as per the recipe. This is done with an exceptionally tiny amount of alkanet and carmine. It won't stain your hair.. Although if you are a bleach blond, do a strand test first.
Ingredients: Rose Water, Sugar, Gum Arabic, Alkanet Root, Carmine, Boric Acid
